MARTY TRYON’S BIOGRAPHY |
Marty
Tryon is the man you see at all Smothers Brothers concerts, supervising the
lighting and sound and running the MIDI machine that provides background
music for Tom and Dick. Marty became Tour Manager for the Brothers Smothers
in 1999 after playing bass guitar for them for ten years. He continues to
play bass for performances with symphony orchestras.
The MIDI Sequencer used in Smothers Brothers concerts was programmed by
Marty with piano tracks provided by Mike Preddy and with all the other parts
performed by Marty (bass, drums, percussion, choir, etc.).
Born in Kansas, Marty and family moved to California when he was seven. By
nine, he was a child actor appearing on, amongst other television shows, the
Danny Thomas Show and Leave it to Beaver. Marty began playing guitar at age
ten and switched to bass guitar in high school, where he was nearly kicked
out of school numerous times for having his hair too long. They stopped
bugging him when he got a recording contract with MGM Records in his junior
year.
Marty has recorded with many of music’s major stars including Dolly Parton,
Mac Davis, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, Donna Summer and lots of others. A
partial list of recording sessions on which he played bass guitar includes
television series (Hill Street Blues, Rockford Files, Magnum P.I.), motion
pictures, (The Sting, 9 to 5), commercials (Budweiser, Frito-Lay, Levis). He
also played on live television shows such as the Tonight Show, Midnight
Special, Solid Gold and specials by the Pointer Sisters, Donna Summer, Mac
Davis, KC and the Sunshine Band, the Beach Boys.
Marty and the Smothers Brothers met in Las Vegas when Marty was playing with
Mac Davis and they were on the same bill. Tom and Marty hit it off talking
about sailing and sailboats and when in 1989 the Smothers Brothers needed a
bass player, they called Marty and he’s been with them ever since.
Tom Smothers says “Marty is the glue that keeps the Brothers together on the
road.”
Marty and his daughter Meghan live in Southern California, where he works
between tours as a Christmas Tree Farmer.
